Preliminary Task

 6 Minute Challenge

We were given a task by our sir known as the 6 minute challenge. We had to choose 3 elements. Location, personality and object. We wrote multiple locations, personalities and objects on small paper chits and put them in a cap, gave it a little shake and then randomly chose out 3 chits .These chits had a random character type, an object and a location (which, in our case were; a drug addict, metal bottle and rooftop. Now me and my team-mate Misbah found it difficult to execute the whole look of a drug addict, and we had a weird, awkward conversation with our teacher on how the drug addict should look where she pointed out on how both, me and Misbah should research on different drugs and their side-effects to be able to come with a look for our character. At this point both of us decided to change this character type to that of a depressed person and the meta bottle to a glass bottle, because the idea that Misbah had in my mind looked better with a glass bottle.

The 3 things we both decided on together are mentioned below:

  • Rooftop as our location
  • Depressed person as our personality
  • Glass bottle as our object
At first we made a very simple outline which was easy to execute but then Misbah gave me some more ideas which were totally worth the shot. Although it was quite hectic to shoot for the challenge but team work makes dream work we finally executed our idea. The genre that we opted for was romance\mystery thriller and we had to make a film opening of about 1-2 minutes but after all the cutting and editing our final project was only for 50 seconds.

MEET OUR TEAM!

Our team comprised of two members only of which, one was obviously me and my partner Misbah Ameen. For the cast, I knew someone who could help us find the cast and the perfect location that we were looking for.
Misbah and I were content when we saw the location and we felt that we can easily shoot here shoot, moreover, the person who helped us with the location also agreed on finding both the actors for our film opening.

NOW COMING TO THE SHOOT!

We started our shoot on 26th December 2021 and I have to say it was such a fun experience. That day, we only shot the scenes of the boy, because we couldn't find any girl that particular day. We took a log sheet as well that day and I think that really made our work much easier.
Now, here's where the whole filming process went a little slow. On 1st January, we went back to the same place as now the girl was arranged, however she didn't fit the character we wanted. Then we called one of misbah's friend's for the shoot. She fit perfectly in the role however we had taken her shots vertically ,so now our next option was to shoot with one of our friends from school and this was possible once our school reopens and we get done with our midterms.
Okay, so flashforward and there we were filming with a friend of ours. Finally we had the shot we were looking for, and finally our filming process ended here and now it was time for the editing....
Below ill be presenting you the elements that helped us accomplish our idea and clear our vision:

INSPIRATION

The part for the boy was pretty much understood and how we will be shooting it. We had visualized the moment we were turning those random elements into a narrative. However, since the girl was an additional element  that we had come up with to add more value to the narrative, we wanted it to look like a flashback. Misbah had a lot of ideas on how we will be shooting the flashback. Whether it's going to be a dialogue or just a few candid shots?
Misbah personally really wanted candid shots only. She is a Swiftie by heart, so she was  just reliving some old taylor swift songs and then she suggested that we watched the song "Style", which is comprised of a lot candid shots, so we took some inspiration from there.

Now if you watch the music video there is a shot of Taylor looking at the camera and then turning her head, and here the shot cuts. That was something that she wanted to do, And we asked the actor to give a deceitful smirk as she looks at the camera.

EDITING!

BTS FROM OUR SHOOT!

Problems we faced and what we learnt!

There were quite a few things that we learnt by the end of this preliminary, and we did encouter a few problems which we now know how to avoid. For example, the first problem that we faced was of casting for the girl. So for the first girl, as I've mentioned this above, she did not fit the character we had in our mind, and for that too Me and misbah had to wait for like a week to find her. I really wish we had seen a picture of her first before we went to the location to shoot, if we would have done this we would have saved our money as well as a lot of effort and time would have been saved. The next mistake that we made was that we filmed the shots of the second girl shots vertically instead of shooting them horizontally. She was even perfect for the role, but since we had shot her scenes vertically we couldn't add her shots to the film opening. Moreover, since she lives very far, we couldn't get her back. So eventually, we shot with one of our mutual friends.
So now we know how we have to cast certain people for certain characters and secondly, we learnt that we have to shoot all our scenes horizontally.😅
